Kyoto Station Exits: Karasuma, Hachijo and the Easy Way Out
Kyoto Station is huge, but one simple rule makes it much calmer: Karasuma is the north side for Kyoto Tower, the main city-bus terminal and central Kyoto; Hachijo is the south side for airport buses, AEON Mall, the Shinkansen side and several large hotels.

Choose your station and destination. You will get the recommended exit, gate, realistic walking time and the details that matter with luggage or limited mobility.
Karasuma or Hachijo?
The Karasuma side faces Kyoto Tower and the main bus terminal. It is usually the right choice for downtown buses, taxis and hotels north of the tracks. Hachijo faces south and is more convenient for airport limousine buses, AEON Mall Kyoto and hotels around Hachijo-dori. If your map only says “Kyoto Station,” check which side of the tracks your destination sits on before leaving.
Arriving by Shinkansen
The Shinkansen gates are closer to the Hachijo side. For Kyoto Tower or the central bus terminal, follow signs through the station toward the Central or Karasuma exits rather than stepping outside immediately. With luggage, the indoor route is usually easier than circling the enormous station building outdoors.
A small detail worth noticing
Kyoto Station is not only a place to pass through. The grand staircase, elevated walkways and open-air views inside the building are worth a few minutes, especially near sunset. When your schedule allows, arrive early instead of treating the station as dead time.
