Japan Child Fare & Age Checker

Japan with kids · 20 researched entries

Which ticket does your child need?

A child can be an adult on one train, a junior at Disney, and a child at another attraction. Compare the rules for your actual travel dates, including birthdays and school-stage exceptions.

Official sources reviewed October 3, 2026 · By Hidden Gems Japan Editorial Team

If school stage changes during the trip, run each stage separately. Do not map an overseas school grade to a Japanese category without checking the operator. For one visit, use the same date twice.

Rail and USJ exceptions

The two-toddler allowance is per fare-paying passenger, not per family. Infants under 1 are separate from that toddler count. This checker covers individual travel, not school groups.

The checker runs in your browser and does not submit these inputs to HGJ. It does not store your birth date or put it in the URL.

Why age alone can give the wrong answer

JR East, Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway have exceptions for a 6-year-old who has not entered elementary school and a 12-year-old who is still an elementary pupil. A normally free young child needs a paid ticket for their own JR reserved seat. Use a child IC card for eligible child-rate IC travel, or buy a child paper ticket; an ordinary adult IC card is not a child ticket.

Tokyo Disney uses Child ages 4–11 and Junior ages 12–17. Ghibli Park uses Child ages 4–12, while the Ghibli Museum’s overseas booking page has different bands. Some museums classify visitors by school stage. The comparison keeps these rules separate.

How to use the result

  1. Enter the birth date and the dates you actually ride or enter, rather than the booking date.
  2. Choose school stage if known; open the exceptions for reserved seats, toddler allowances or USJ’s Japanese school calendar.
  3. Look for category changes during the trip and follow the official source for the exact ticket and price.

This MVP covers ordinary JR East tickets, two Tokyo subway operators and 17 attraction entries. It does not calculate nationwide JR Pass prices, regional passes, every Japanese railway, discounts for disabilities, group tickets, resident benefits or attraction height restrictions. Numerical prices are published reference amounts, not live quotes. Unresolved rules show “Unknown”; records older than 90 days withhold classifications until reviewed.

For child IC travel, see PASMO’s official child-card policy and our Japan IC Cards With Kids guide. A child IC card’s validity and the operator’s fare eligibility are separate checks.
