Shikoku Mura

Shikoku architecture open-air museum

The Shikoku Mura is an open-air museum located at the base of Yashima Mountain. It contains traditional buildings and structures from all over Shikoku Island that have been relocated here.

Farmhouses, storehouses, and traditional workshops that produced sugar and soya sauce are among the exhibited buildings, mostly dating from the Edo and Meiji periods.

As well as bridges and lighthouses, there is an open-air kabuki theater with occasional performances. Similar to the ones found in neighboring Tokushima Prefecture’s Iya Valley, a vine suspension bridge with wood and steel cables is one of the most popular attractions in the area.

Besides the small art gallery, Shikoku Mura also features paintings and sculptures by world-class modern artists. The gallery has a nice view of the city and sometimes hosts live performances. The Historical fact -first modern artists to exhibit in Shikoku Mura were Pierre Bonnard and Renoir.
