Kawagoe Festival 2026 takes place on Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18. The official 2026 map lists 26 participating floats. Choose Saturday for the clearest evening focal point: Yoiyama is scheduled for roughly 6:00–7:00 p.m. Choose Sunday for the busiest, most concentrated float experience: the official city-hall parade is scheduled for roughly 1:30–4:00 p.m., and the tourism association says float activity is especially lively that day. Either day is a realistic Tokyo day trip, but this is a major festival weekend—not a quiet visit to Kawagoe.
Quick answer: should you go to Kawagoe Festival 2026?
- When: October 17–18, 2026. Traffic restrictions are scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on both days.
- Saturday or Sunday: Saturday is the better fit for Yoiyama and an evening-led plan. Sunday has the scheduled city-hall float parade and is the stronger choice if seeing many floats is the priority.
- How crowded: Kawagoe City expects the Ichibangai warehouse-street area to be especially congested. The city says daytime should be relatively easier than the evening, not quiet.
- Tokyo day trip: Yes. Direct rail access makes the trip practical, but allow extra time to walk through the restricted area and reach your station.
- Day or evening: Daytime is the more manageable option. Evening brings lanterns, music and Hikkawase, with greater crowd pressure.
- With children: Possible with a short route, daytime timing and an exit plan. A stroller becomes awkward in dense evening crowds.

What is Hikkawase?
Hikkawase happens when festival floats meet, turn their stages toward one another and answer with music and dance. At night, lanterns and calls from the float teams make these encounters one of the festival’s main draws. It is not a single performance with one guaranteed start time: encounters depend on where moving floats meet. Use the official festival map and live float-location app, but treat any exact encounter as dynamic.
How crowded is Kawagoe Festival?
Kawagoe City’s October congestion guidance says Ichibangai is expected to be especially crowded on both festival dates. The city describes daytime as relatively easier for enjoying the festival. That is a comparison with the evening peak, not a promise of empty streets.
The normal Hidden Gems strategy for an ordinary Kawagoe day—arrive before the late-morning flow, walk the warehouse street and improvise—is not enough here. Main streets narrow where floats, crews and spectators meet; Hikkawase areas can stop moving; and station approaches become busier near the end of the evening. Use side streets when directed, keep the return route in mind and do not count on crossing a float route quickly.
What time should you arrive?
- Mainly daytime floats: reach Kawagoe before late morning. This gives you time to orient yourself before the scheduled afternoon events; it does not make the festival uncrowded.
- Evening atmosphere: arrive by mid-afternoon, eat before the busiest period and choose your return station before dusk.
- With children: arrive in the morning, see daytime floats, use an indoor or seated break and leave before the evening peak unless the children already cope well with dense, noisy events.
- Full experience: expect a long walking day. Saturday offers the cleanest day-to-Yoiyama progression; Sunday concentrates more float activity in the afternoon.
Kawagoe Station or Hon-Kawagoe Station?

The festival’s official access information gives typical non-disruption journeys of about 30 minutes from Ikebukuro to Kawagoe on Tobu, about 44 minutes from Seibu-Shinjuku to Hon-Kawagoe by Seibu limited express, and roughly 50–60 minutes from Shinjuku to Kawagoe by JR. Those are train times, not door-to-door festival travel times. Seibu limited-express services require the relevant limited-express ticket; ordinary trains do not.
Important: normal tourist buses change during the festival
Do not plan a standard hop-on sightseeing loop. Eagle Bus’s 2026 festival notice says the Koedo Loop Bus will detour all day on both dates and will not serve Hon-Kawagoe Station, Koedo Kurari, Renkeiji-kita, Hikawa-jinja-mae, Otemon-mae, City Hall, Kura-no-machi, Kashiya Yokocho or Kawagoeshi Station. Its one-day pass, including the RYDE PASS version, will not be sold or accepted on those two days.
Other local buses also operate around the large vehicle-free zone. Build the day around walking from a rail station, not around normal tourist-bus stops.
How do you get back to Tokyo?
- For Ikebukuro and the west side of Tokyo: Tobu from Kawagoe or Kawagoeshi is usually the simplest choice.
- For Shinjuku: Seibu from Hon-Kawagoe is direct. A limited-express seat can improve comfort when available, but ordinary Seibu trains remain an option.
- For JR connections: use Kawagoe Station and the JR Kawagoe Line where it fits the rest of your route.
No last-train time is stated here because the useful departure depends on your Tokyo destination and the final October 17–18 timetable. Check the railway’s journey planner on the day. More importantly, protect extra time for the walk: crowd controls and moving floats can make the festival area-to-station leg much slower than an ordinary Kawagoe visit.
Is Kawagoe Festival manageable with kids?
It can work, but it is not an effortless toddler outing. Daytime is the better default. Keep the route short, use a compact stroller only while streets are moving, and carry a carrier if a younger child may sleep. Evening Hikkawase is louder, darker and more compressed.
The official map lists temporary and permanent toilets, accessible toilets, baby-care spaces, rest areas and a child-lost-and-found point. It also identifies nursing or baby-care access at facilities including the festival museum, Motomachi rest area and other public buildings, with opening hours that vary. Save the official map before leaving Tokyo rather than trying to improvise in a crowd.

Are paid seats useful?
Availability checked September 28, 2026: the Resona Coedo Terrace package lists all Saturday evening options as full. Sunday afternoon and evening terrace options are marked as having only a few places left. The venue is on Ichibangai, about a 12-minute walk from Hon-Kawagoe Station, and packages combine a reserved viewing position with food and drinks.
Pricing is premium and varies by area and session. For example, the operator’s published 1F terrace price is a table charge of ¥33,000 for the 12:00–3:30 p.m. session or ¥55,000 for the 5:30–9:00 p.m. session, plus ¥16,500 per person for food and free-flow drinks. Check the current tourism-association listing before paying because availability can change. Street viewing remains free and does not require a ticket.
What happens if it rains?
The official 2026 brochure warns that featured events may be cancelled in bad weather. It does not promise that every float or headline event will operate unchanged. Check the official festival website and live festival app on the day; do not travel on the assumption that a printed schedule overrides a weather decision.
