The hardest Shimanami Kaido decision is often what happens after the ride. A one-way rental can take you from Onomichi to Imabari, but your suitcase, next hotel and onward train may still be on the other side of the islands. Choose your finish and next overnight stop first. Then select the distance, bicycle and baggage service that fit.
The marked cycling route links Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture with Imabari in Ehime Prefecture. Shimanami Japan describes the full ride as approximately 70 km, with beginners and slower riders allowing up to 10 hours once breaks and sightseeing are included. Its detailed two-day itinerary covers approximately 35 km to Setoda and 43 km onward to Imabari; actual distance varies with the route and detours. Quick decision: a short ride, one full day or two days?
| Your available time | Practical route | Where to sleep afterward | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Part of a day | Ferry from Onomichi to Setoda, rent locally and ride a short out-and-back segment | Onomichi or Setoda | Return the bicycle and reach the ferry before each operator’s cutoff |
| One full cycling day | Onomichi to Imabari, or the reverse | At the finish, preferably Imabari or Onomichi | Early start, suitable fitness and enough time before the rental terminal closes |
| Two cycling days | Onomichi → Setoda → Imabari | Setoda on the first night; Imabari on the second unless continuing onward | A rental category valid for multiple days and a bag plan for both nights |
For a shorter outing, the Setoda–Tatara Shimanami Park stretch is approximately 8.5 km each way according to Shimanami Japan. You can reach Setoda by ferry from Onomichi and rent at Setoda Tourist Information Center, then return to the same terminal rather than committing to a one-way island crossing. Check the ferry’s actual sailing times and bicycle return hours for your date before building the day around this plan. Source: Shimanami Japan Setoda guide, checked October 1, 2026.
A timed example, not a guaranteed connection: Onomichi City’s published port timetable, revised April 26, 2025, lists a 09:15 departure from Onomichi Station Pier arriving at Setoda at 09:59 and a 15:00 return ferry reaching Onomichi at 15:44. Allow about ten minutes to walk from Setoda Port to the rental desk. If a reserved bicycle is ready around 10:20, ride toward Tatara Shimanami Park (approximately 8.5 km one way from the port), have a break and lunch, and aim to return the bike by about 14:20. That leaves roughly 40 minutes to walk back and board the 15:00 ferry. The rental operator’s listed Setoda closing time is 17:00, but the ferry is the earlier constraint in this example. Check both operators’ current timetable, bicycle stock and any disruption for the exact travel day; shorten the ride to Sunset Beach if the group needs more time. Do not use an old tourism article’s “last ferry before 5 p.m.” as a current schedule.
A full crossing in one day is an athletic travel day, even if the route looks straightforward on a map. The bridges have access ramps, the itinerary includes roads shared with other traffic, and a museum, beach or long lunch adds time. If riding is only one part of a wider Japan trip, two days with a Setoda stop gives you more room to enjoy the islands. Source: Shimanami Japan rental and route guidance, checked October 1, 2026.
Pick your direction and return terminal before booking lodging
Onomichi to Imabari one-way
This is a convenient direction when you are coming from Hiroshima, Okayama or Kyoto and intend to continue into Shikoku. Sleep in Onomichi before an early start. On the operator’s two-day route, the first day ends in Setoda on Ikuchijima, approximately 35 km from Onomichi; the second day continues roughly 43 km to Imabari. The route includes the short ferry crossing from Onomichi to Mukaishima at the start. Source: Shimanami Japan two-day itinerary, checked October 1, 2026.
Returning your rental at Imabari Station makes sense if the next night is in Imabari or you are continuing by rail toward Matsuyama or another Shikoku destination. Confirm the return terminal on the reservation: Imabari Itoyama, at the end of the final bridge, and Imabari Station are separate terminals. Shimanami Japan’s suggested route continues approximately 6 km from Sunrise Itoyama to Imabari Station on public roads. Source: Shimanami Japan two-day itinerary and terminal list, checked October 1, 2026.
If you plan to return to Hiroshima or continue to Kyoto immediately after finishing, calculate the bus or rail connection from your actual bike-return terminal. Finishing the cycling route at sunset and assuming you can still check in across the region creates a fragile plan. An Imabari overnight is the simpler choice after a leisurely two-day crossing.
A partial ride from Onomichi or Setoda
For travelers who mainly want the scenery, a partial ride can be the better itinerary. One option is to take the Onomichi–Setoda ferry, rent in Setoda, ride toward Sunset Beach or Tatara Shimanami Park, and return the bike at Setoda. This keeps the cycling distance adjustable and avoids needing to retrieve a bicycle from the far end of the route. Shimanami Japan lists Setoda Port–Sunset Beach at approximately 3.5 km one-way and Setoda Port–Tatara Shimanami Park at approximately 8.5 km one-way. Source: Shimanami Japan Setoda guide, checked October 1, 2026.
Another option is to rent at Onomichi and ride a section before returning to Onomichi. Set the turnaround point by your riding pace and terminal hours, rather than assuming every ferry will accept your group and its rented bicycles at the last moment. Shimanami Japan describes an Onomichi–Setoda ferry connection and a seasonal Cycle Ship service that can carry bicycles, but sailings and bicycle space need confirmation with the ferry operator. The longer Onomichi–Imabari Cycle Ship connection advertised for selected autumn 2026 dates is a limited service, not an everyday fallback. The bike category changes the itinerary
The operator uses two easily confused names. As checked October 1, 2026:
| Shimanami Japan rental category | Multi-day rental? | Drop-off rule | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cross bike or city cycle | Yes | All listed terminals | Size, stock and your planned return hour |
| Battery-Assisted Bicycle | Yes | All listed terminals | Pickup locations, charging/battery-swap locations and range for your mode |
| E-bike | No: one day only | All listed terminals | Pickup availability, rider height and the one-day return deadline |
| Tandem | No: one day only | Same terminal | Restricted permitted sections and availability |
These distinctions come from Shimanami Japan’s current rental table, checked October 1, 2026. Its two-day itinerary calls an “E-bike” a recommended option, but the current rental table limits that named category to one day. For a two-day assisted ride, choose the separately listed Battery-Assisted Bicycle, confirm its pickup point and battery plan, and obtain confirmation for the specific reservation. The manufacturer range shown on the site is an estimate by assistance mode, not a guarantee for your weight, terrain or use.
The operator strongly recommends bicycle reservations, particularly during busy periods. Helmets are included and required for its rentals. Return the bicycle during the selected terminal’s business hours; hours vary by terminal and season. Source: Shimanami Japan rental guidance, checked October 1, 2026.
Where should you sleep?
Onomichi: Choose this as the night before an Onomichi-start ride or as the night after an out-and-back excursion. It gives you access to the rental terminal and the Onomichi–Mukaishima crossing. It also works as a finish if you ride from Imabari and intend to travel toward Hiroshima, Okayama or Kyoto the next day.
Setoda, Ikuchijima: This is the clearest halfway overnight on the operator’s two-day Onomichi-to-Imabari route. The port town has a range of accommodation, and the route gives you a first day of approximately 35 km rather than a race to the far end. Reserve a place that can store your bicycle overnight and confirm check-in time. Source: Shimanami Japan two-day itinerary, checked October 1, 2026.
Omishima: Consider it when an island stay or a longer first riding day matters more than dividing the main route evenly. It is not interchangeable with Setoda for travel logistics: confirm the distance to your specific lodging, dinner options, bicycle storage and the following day’s finish. The public rental network has a terminal at Tatara Shimanami Park, but your accommodation may be some distance from it. Source: Shimanami Japan terminal list, checked October 1, 2026.
Imabari: Sleep here after a full Onomichi-to-Imabari crossing if you want a relaxed finish, have luggage arriving at an Imabari facility, or plan to continue in Shikoku. It removes the need to catch a cross-island bus immediately after the ride.
Hiroshima, Mihara, Fukuyama or Okayama: These are useful rail-side bases, depending on the next destination, but they are not substitutes for an island overnight on a two-day crossing. Fukuyama is the key transfer point between the Imabari highway bus and local rail to Onomichi. If you want a Hiroshima sightseeing day, give it its own time rather than placing it between a late cycling finish and a Kyoto-bound train. Okayama can make sense if you are heading east or adding the Okayama to Naoshima day trip. Source for connections: Shimanami Japan transport guide, checked October 1, 2026.
Solve the luggage problem before the first pedal stroke
A daypack for water, a layer, medication and valuables is different from carrying a suitcase. Choose one of these arrangements based on where you will actually sleep.
- Store a bag and return to the same town. This works for a short ride from Onomichi or Imabari, provided the locker or staffed counter fits your bag and remains accessible when you return. It does not solve a one-way finish unless you plan a separate trip back to collect the bag. Shimanami Japan lists lockers and staffed options in both gateway towns. Source: Shimanami Japan baggage guide, checked October 1, 2026.
- Use Sagawa’s affiliated-facility same-day delivery. Its cycling service accepts luggage at participating departure facilities and delivers to participating arrival facilities along the route. As checked October 1, Sagawa lists ¥2,200 per piece, up to 160 cm total dimensions and 30 kg, with facility-specific handoff and collection rules. Many hotels restrict participation to guests; groups need an advance reservation. Onomichi-side handoff is commonly by 09:00 and Imabari-side handoff by 10:00, but the exact origin/destination pair and pickup window govern. For example, Sagawa’s i.i.imabari! Cycle Station entry lists March–November pickup as 08:00–10:00; do not assume a same-day arrival there can be collected at the end of a ride. Choose an eligible hotel with an evening collection window or another valid destination after checking the facility list. Sagawa also warns that a delivery can slip to the next day. Keep medication, valuables and ride essentials with you. Sources: Sagawa cycling service and Shimanami Japan baggage guide, checked October 1, 2026.
- For a two-day ride, send the large bag ahead and carry one overnight kit. Shimanami Japan describes a next-day Onomichi-to-Imabari Station terminal option with a before-noon handoff, but warns that the drop-off location may change from October 9, 2026. Confirm the current handoff location, eligibility, delivery day and collection window before relying on it. This arrangement leaves you with a small bag for Setoda. Source: Shimanami Japan baggage guide, checked October 1, 2026.
- Use standard forwarding for a later arrival. When you do not need the large bag at the cycling finish, ask your next staffed hotel or a carrier about shipping it to a later stop. This requires acceptance by the receiving property and a confirmed delivery date. The site’s Japan luggage forwarding guide explains the hotel, Airbnb and office-pickup distinctions.
For a Setoda overnight, do not assume one Sagawa transaction automatically covers both cycling days. It delivers between your chosen participating facilities. If you need the large suitcase at the intermediate hotel and at Imabari the next day, verify whether two separately arranged transfers are possible; otherwise carry the overnight essentials and send the suitcase to the final base.
Onward routes without accidental backtracking
Hiroshima before or after cycling
If Hiroshima is an important stop, a coherent west-to-east or east-to-west sequence matters more than squeezing everything into one day:
- Hiroshima → Onomichi → Setoda → Imabari → Shikoku: good when the ride is your bridge into Matsuyama or another Shikoku stop.
- Shikoku → Imabari → Setoda → Onomichi → Hiroshima: good when Hiroshima follows the cycling trip.
- Onomichi → Imabari → Hiroshima: possible if you genuinely want to finish in Imabari and then travel back to Hiroshima. Budget for the separate highway bus, and consider sleeping in Imabari first.
The Imabari–Hiroshima highway bus is a separate, reserved-seat route. Check current departure and seat availability with Setouchi Bus, rather than assuming a late finish will connect.
Kyoto-bound: a crossing or a partial ride?
If Kyoto is next and Shikoku is not part of the wider trip, a Setoda partial ride returning to Onomichi is often the cleaner geographical choice: your luggage and rail route remain on the Honshu side. A full Onomichi-to-Imabari ride is still worthwhile if the crossing itself is the priority, but it creates a return leg toward Fukuyama before you head east by rail.
Shimanami Japan describes the Imabari–Fukuyama highway bus and the local-train connection from Fukuyama to Onomichi. Important October 2026 update: Setouchi Bus now lists the Imabari–Fukuyama Shimanami Liner as reserved, assigned seating; same-day travel without a reservation is subject to an available seat. This supersedes an older “no reservation required” statement still visible in Shimanami Japan’s rental FAQ. Check the bus operator’s current page when planning your finish. Sources checked October 1, 2026: Setouchi Bus and Shimanami Japan transport.
From Fukuyama, connect to the Sanyo Shinkansen for Kyoto as appropriate for your ticket. Do not estimate the full post-ride connection from a generic “Imabari to Kyoto” search without allowing time to return the bike, collect your bag, reach the bus stop and change trains.
Continuing into Shikoku
A one-way ride finishing in Imabari makes the most sense when the next part of the trip is in Shikoku. Imabari has rail and bus connections toward Matsuyama; the exact connection and last service depend on your date and finish time. Source: Shimanami Japan transport guide, checked October 1, 2026. Give yourself an Imabari night if sightseeing stops, children’s pace or a luggage collection window make the last connection tight.
For a broader trip, place the cycling days alongside the realistic first Japan itinerary and decide what destination you will remove or shorten. The islands deserve more than the leftover hours between two major cities.
Booking checklist
- Write down the start terminal, final bike-return terminal and next overnight address.
- Choose a ride length and bicycle category; verify multi-day eligibility, pickup locations and return rules on the rental operator’s current page.
- Book the Setoda or other island overnight only after confirming bicycle storage and the distance from your chosen route.
- Match the bag to an actual origin–destination facility pair on Sagawa’s list, or confirm a later standard shipment. Recheck Shimanami Japan’s announced October 9 handoff-location change.
- If your plan uses the Onomichi–Setoda ferry or a seasonal Cycle Ship, confirm the sailing date, bicycle carriage and return journey on the operator-linked transport page and Cycle Ship page.
- If you finish in Imabari and travel back toward Fukuyama or Hiroshima, check the appropriate reserved-seat bus or Hiroshima route. Then check your train separately.
- Leave a buffer for photographs, meals, a delayed bag and reaching the terminal before closing. Do not count on cycling after dark; the rental operator advises against it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I rent a bicycle in Onomichi and return it in Imabari?
Yes, for Shimanami Japan bicycle categories that allow returns at all terminals, including its cross bikes and Battery-Assisted Bicycles. Select the particular Imabari terminal when reserving and return during its business hours. The operator’s E-bike also allows all-terminal return but is limited to one day. Source: Shimanami Japan rental rules, checked October 1, 2026.
Can I use an electric-assist bicycle for two days?
Shimanami Japan lists its Battery-Assisted Bicycle for multi-day use and all-terminal drop-off. Its separately named E-bike is a one-day rental. Check battery-swap locations and your planned assistance mode before committing to a two-day route. Source: Shimanami Japan rental rules, checked October 1, 2026.
Is Setoda a practical overnight stop?
Yes. Shimanami Japan places it approximately halfway along its two-day Onomichi-to-Imabari Blue Line itinerary, with roughly 35 km on day one and 43 km on day two. Book accommodation and bicycle storage in advance. Source: Shimanami Japan two-day itinerary, checked October 1, 2026.
Can my suitcase arrive on the same day?
Potentially. Sagawa offers same-day transfers between participating facilities, with early handoff and a collection window that varies by facility. Some locations are guest-only, and the i.i.imabari! Cycle Station’s March–November pickup window is in the morning, not after a typical daylong ride. Groups require advance reservation. Delivery can slip to the next day, so never make the ride depend on a universal same-day guarantee. Source: Sagawa cycling service, checked October 1, 2026.
Should I sleep in Hiroshima after finishing at Onomichi?
It can work if you ride toward Onomichi, return the bike within terminal hours and have a confirmed train connection. If you ride toward Imabari, Hiroshima requires a separate return trip by bus. On a leisurely two-day crossing, sleeping at the finish is often easier.
Can I ride only part of the route and take a ferry back?
Yes, the Onomichi–Setoda connection can support a partial itinerary, but verify the specific sailing and bicycle carriage. Renting and returning at Setoda avoids depending on bicycle space aboard the return ferry. The special full-length Cycle Ship operates only on selected advertised dates in autumn 2026.
